When travelling to Tanzania you should understand these type of Roads:

Main highways- these are big roads connecting cities such as those linking Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Dodoma, these type of Roads are generally in good condition and are paved, they are well maintained in regular bases and are tarmac roads.

Secondary Roads: these are roads connecting  smaller towns or rural areas these are a mixture of tarmac but  some are often made of gravel or or simply left with its own dust and rocky state  depending on where you are, but also the dusty ones become challenging during rainy season due to mud and erosion, also can be bumpy during daily commute.

Urban Roads: Major cities like Dar es salaam, Arusha and Mwanza have paved tarmac roads at central Areas, these roads are mostly two lanes , three to four lanes cutting through the cities for certain kilometers, In Dar es Salaam they have up to six lanes which include flyovers

Rural Roads and National Park Roads: In rural Areas and around National parks roads are usually unpaved and can be rough and bumpy, expect some rocky ride example in Serengeti National Park this is because National Parks in Tanzania is protecting the Natural Habitat of the Animals so no road construction is allowed within the National parks , you will require a 4x 4 vehicle to navigate in these roads. During the rainy  season March to May and November to December, these roads may become difficult.

Roads in Tanzania leave an extra area for Pedestrians but everyone else use the same main road, this is to mean Trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, small vehicle, big vehicle etc will be competing for a spot, so upon entering main cities extra precautions are needed to make sure no accident is encountered.

Its also important to understand that drivers in Tanzania cars are right handed , but you will need to  keep left at the roundabouts, this is very important to remember.

At Stallion we customize a right vehicle for you depending on where you are visiting, this is why it crucial for us to know where you will be  so we will give you the right vehicle with right tire, considering the place you visit sometime a right car but low profile tire can be a problem, if the roads are thorny and rocky, so to avoid breakdown and major delays we usually recommend a suitable car depending  on where you are going.
